Year 12 - Secure the Barry Elmore Cup for the Second Year and Raise £100

posted 27 Mar 2017, 02:17 by Paul Brumby   [ updated 27 Mar 2017, 02:23 ]

Well done to the Year 12's who secured the Barry Elmore Cup, following a very tight match. Both sides played with great spirit in a tightly fought contest which could have gone either way. In the end it was the general all round fitness which sealed the fate for the Year 13's as the 12's had that little bit extra in the tank. Worthy of mention was Russ Fletcher who scored two sublime goals for the Year 13's and Jarred holmes with the worst timed tackle of all time.

The event was well attended by spectators who made voluntary contributions to raise funds and awareness of the VIRS charity (supporting families and patients going through kidney transplants), which has been brought to our attention through our close ties to Simon Elmore, World Transplant Athlete and son of Barry.

Well done to both the participants and organisers of the excellent Master Chef competition held amongst the Sixth Formers. The food was quite simply exquisite and all were deserving of the high praise given by the highly critical judges including Mr Cooper. Congratulations go to the overall winners Amelia and Savannah whose dishes combined both presentation skills and taste to die for. The event was run very professionally by the Business Studies students.  "Cooking does not get tougher than this" !!!  Photos of the event

As part of the PSE programme for Year 12's we had a session with Craig Shawcroft, Crew Manager, Prevention & Inclusion. The focus of the session was to raise awareness of the need for young adults to drive responsibly as well as their role as a passenger.

Young drivers (17-24 years old) are at a much higher risk of crashing than older drivers. Drivers aged 17-19 only make up 1.5% of UK licence holders, but are involved in 12% of fatal and serious crashes.

Data on British drivers shows that:

  • Drivers aged 16-19 are more than twice as likely to die in a crash as drivers aged 40-49.
  • One in four 18-24 year olds (23%) crash within two years of passing their driving test.
  • Young male drivers are involved in many more crashes than young female drivers .
